My Safetynet Journey

Helpdesk Support Technician

My role started off as a helpdesk support technician and was working towards a Level 3 apprenticeship in IT, Telecoms, and Digital Communications. My role included being part of a dedicated helpdesk team as a 1st and 2nd line support technician, alongside this I was exposed to the internal IT infrastructure and also the implementation team to give me a broad introduction to the company.

My responsibilities included:

  • Answering support calls from a range or hardware and software customer
  • Logging support tickets
  • Resolving 1st and 2nd line support issues incluiding remote desktop support, hardware support, and software support
  • Escalating 3rd line support issues

After 12 months, I completed my Level 3 apprenticeship and advanced onto a Level 4 Network Engineer apprenticeship, this advance gave me more responsibility and allowed me to improve my technical skills within the business.

Due to myself starting a new apprenticeship, my director Lisa started to slowly migrate me over to the Implementation team to understand the customer onboarding and software delivery process. Alongside this migration we lost our head of IT, due to this absence, I was also responsible for maintaining the internal network and learning how everything within the company worked to provide internal user support.

Toward the end of 2018, I became an Implementation Specialist and was taking ownership of customer projects to manage their onboarding and installation process, alongside supporting internal users.

My responsibilities included:

  • Maintaining critical internal systems
  • Internal user support for Windows desktop support, hardware and software support
  • Office365/Azure administration
  • Access control implementation and management
  • User enrolement/ leavers

Throughout my time as an Implementation Specialist, I was also dedicating time each week to my apprenticeship by gathering evidence and documenting my experience, I also completed a PRINCE2 certification alongside this and gained a PRICE2 Practitioner certification.

I completed my L4 Network Engineer apprenticeship in 2019 with a Distinction Grade. I took a couple months away from education and dedicated myself to the business and ensuring I could spend 100% of my time to my role. After a few months of completing my apprenticeship, I was approached by my director Lisa and asked if I would like to take part in another apprenticeship, a Level 4 Cyber Security Technologist apprenticeship, I signed up to the
apprenticeship a week later.

Network Engineer
